Back in January, we asked for your feedback on our SS25 colour palette, and the response was incredible! After reviewing all your comments (thank you for so many thoughtful responses!), I'm thrilled to finally reveal the first of our new colours based on your feedback: Burnt Olive!
This gorgeous, earthy tone will be launching this Thursday (1st May) and I couldn't be more excited to share a little sneak peek with you today.
What you taught us
We learned so much from asking for your input. For starters, we noticed how many of you are paying close attention to your colour season and selecting pieces accordingly – something we'll definitely keep in mind for future collections. We also realised we'd missed some crucial highly requested shades from our initial palette (more blues, anyone?). And perhaps most surprising was seeing yellow – which is trending for 2025 – receive hardly any votes! We were so sure we'd go with yellow, but based on the lack of votes, we dropped it. We're now seeing it everywhere are feel a little concerned we shot ourselves in the foot there but but in our community we trust.
Back to our roots: limited edition colour drops
When we first started Not Basics, all our colours were thoughtfully released as limited editions – allowing us to be more responsive to what you actually wanted rather than following fleeting trends. Since moving our production to Turkey, we've been able to work with smaller quantities, giving us the flexibility to bring back this more intentional approach.
For Burnt Olive, we're only producing a small batch, and on launch day our mailing list subscribers will get priority access with 1-hour early shopping. This approach allows us to be more experimental and responsive to your feedback, while creating pieces that feel special.
Behind the scenes: My first product photoshoot
After a creative slump and with budgets tight (as they are for so many small businesses right now), I decided to step behind the camera myself instead of hiring our usual photographer. In a bid to keep things lean for this launch, I planned, directed, and photographed everything myself—a complete first for me!
Taking inspiration from the name itself, I created these playful olive-themed teasers and then went on to shoot all the website photos too. It was equal parts terrifying and exhilarating, but I'm genuinely proud of the results.
Let me tell you - fishing dozens of slippery olives out of cans was NOT the glamorous photoshoot experience I imagined! And whilst I love olives, I'm not sure I'll be eating them for a while 😂
From concept to final images, the whole process was nerve-wracking but incredibly rewarding. There's something special about photographing products you've poured so much into developing, and despite the many deleted photos along the way, I'm really proud of how everything turned out!
Making the Switch: Natural Fibres in Burnt Olive
We'll be releasing the following styles in limited edition colour Burnt Olive:
For the beady-eyed amongst you who just spotted that new addition – you're right to be excited! Meet the Wrap Leggings a completely new style we're launching within this collection. We'll share more details soon, because they deserve their own blog post.
As always, all these pieces are crafted from 95% OCS certified organic cotton and 5% elastane for just the right amount of stretch. Our tops are double-lined for opacity without adding bulk, giving you that perfect balance of coverage and comfort.
This is part of our broader mission to help you "make the switch" – replacing synthetic, plastic-based basics with ones made from natural fibres that feel incredible on your skin. Just like the clean beauty movement changed how we think about what we put on our faces, we believe it's time for the same evolution in what we wear every day.
After speaking with many of you, we've also made some thoughtful tweaks to our Organic Cotton Leggings, which you can read more about here. These improvements will debut with the Burnt Olive collection.
Limited edition means limited quantaties
I want to be transparent with you all - Burnt Olive is a true limited edition colour. As I mentioned, we're only producing a small batch, which means once it's gone, it's truly gone. If past limited editions are any indication, popular sizes tend to sell out quickly.
By producing in smaller batches based on what you've told us you want, we can be more intentional with our resources and create pieces that feel special and meaningful.
More limited edition colours to come for SS25
Based on your incredible feedback, we've chosen a few new colours for SS25, with Burnt Olive being the first to launch. We're particularly excited about introducing more blues in upcoming releases - you've been heard! One of our upcoming colours wasn't even on our original palette but was highly requested in your comments, which shows just how valuable your input has been.
Thank you for being here!
It's been over two months since we first shared our proposed colour palette options with you, and I can't express how much your input has shaped our direction during this time. Having you vote on our colour options has made this truly a community-driven collection, and we're so grateful that you took the time to share your preferences back in January.
What do you think of Burnt Olive? Are you as excited as we are? And which piece are you most looking forward to adding to your collection? Let us know in the comments below!
